Sitting at the bar just the other day
Old man walked in I noticed right away
Vietnam veteran hat
They sat next to me and just like that
We started to talk like old friends do
Been around the block a time or two
I seen the past in his eyes, as he said

I left for war when I was just a kid
The same way most of my buddies did
And most nights I go back there, in my dreams
I’m proud that I could do my part
And I’ll always be a soldier in my heart
I never thought this pain would stay with me
I left the jungle far behind
But the war, came home with me

Army boots sinking in the sand of iraq, 1991
My life has been full of trials
I try to show the world a smile
But inside the storm is gaining ground
Can’t give it the chance to touch down

But the war came home with me
